Ultrasound Evaluation Q & A

What is an ultrasound?

Ultrasound is a pain-free, safe method used to obtain an image of the internal organs and is commonly used by Dr. Emma to detect problems with a woman’s reproductive system. They can also be used to view a growing fetus. The ultrasound uses sound waves conducted via a transducer. The transducer collects information when sound waves bounce back off of the organs and records these images in a computer. These images are then displayed on a monitor. Dr. Emma will use these real-time ultrasound images to assess the structure and movement of internal organs and the blood flow in vessels and arteries.

How Is an ultrasound performed?

To begin the ultrasound procedure, Dr. Emma will apply a special gel to the woman’s abdomen. This gel acts as a conductor for the sound waves. Dr. Emma will then use the transducer to direct the sound waves through to the uterus. The sound waves bounce off bones and tissues. These returning waves are recorded by the transducer and then sent digitally back to the computer which generates black and white images of the organs or fetus.

What types of ultrasound are there?

There are quite a few types ultrasound exams used at the practice. However, they will all use the same basic sound wave technology. This include:

  • Transvaginal Scans – Probe transducers are inserted into the vagina to create sonogram images. This is commonly used during the early stages of pregnancy.
  • Standard Ultrasound – This is an ultrasound exam which uses a transducer moved over the stomach to create 2-D images of organs and/or a fetus.
  • Advanced Ultrasound – This exam targets a potential problem and uses more high-tech equipment to obtain more detailed images.
  • Doppler Ultrasound –  This measures slight changes in the frequency of the ultrasound waves as they bounce back off moving objects. The Doppler ultrasound is commonly used to view blood flowing through arteries and veins in addition to blood flow in the umbilical cord.
  • 3-D Ultrasound –  This uses unique probes and software to generate 3-D images of a developing fetus.
  • 4-D or Dynamic 3-D Ultrasound – This ultrasound utilizes scanners to view the face and movements of the fetus before delivery.
  • Fetal Echocardiography – Here ultrasound waves are used to assess a fetus’s heart function and anatomy. This helps to identify probable congenital heart defects.
